Pacific Coast Highway Road Trip Part 2

'Oh wow!', Elephant Seals, and all.

The second day of our Pacific Coast Highway road trip was stunning. It was seriously a fantastic day!  Through changing micro climates to lunch in the trees to the stunning vistas, the day was almost indescribable.

We started the day by making fast ride north on Hwy 101 to Monterey, CA where we caught Hwy 1 to turn South. We chose this route as during July the morning marine layer along the Central Coast is usually heaving making the riding conditions more torturous and very cold. If you are not from here, let me give you some perspective. When we left Morro Bay and when we entered Carmel-by-the-Sea it was approximately 55 degrees. Even with the sun out it was never reached above 65 that day.

From Carmel-by-the-Sea most of the road is along the shorter cliffs until you turn inland towards Big Sur and ride through some of the most majestic trees. It is truly beautiful. It was here in Big Sure, CA that we stopped at Fernwood Resort to enjoyed a fantastic lunch in the trees. Fernwood offers several accommodation options, a camp store, and a lovely restaurant. Though I highly recommend reservations as sites go quickly.

As we got back on the road to continue the trip the skies cleared and the vista changed almost moment to moment. To put words to just how stunning it was is simply not possible. Just a heads up, if you watch the video the traffic you see was highly unusual. Under normal conditions traffic on the part of Hwy 1 we rode is usually very heavy. So be advised to allow for plenty of time, if you can travel during the middle of the week, and be watchful of people pulling out of different lots and side streets.

Towards the end of the day we stopped at the Elephant Seal Vista Point in San Simeon, CA. These amazing animal were incredible to see. It is worth making the stop to not only see them, but the beautiful stretch of beach they call home.

We ended the day back in Morro Bay where we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Lolo's Mexican Food. The tacos were so good and they took all the preclusions to ensure a relaxing and safe dinning experience for us. All in all it was a wonderful and memorable day!

Check back next week when I will have the footage of our ride along a back road between Paso Robles and Morro Bay before we started our trip back home to Santa Barbara.

Until then… Get out and ride, have fun, be safe, and catch you in the next post……
