Install LED Passing Lamps For A Road King Classic

What time is it? It's install LED passing lamps for a Road King Classic time! After taking on the project to install my new LED Headlight, and it was easier than I expected, I decided to take on the project to change out the passing lamps as well.

While at Santa Maria Harley-Davidson I spoke with Tony, my parts guy, and was only going to change out the bulbs in the passing lamps when he asked… 'Have you seen the passing lamps that go with the headlight?' He pulls out the WixTech Superspots Chrome LED Passing Lamp Modules and tells me that they are only a little more than the bulbs. I swear that the man has become instigator. Anyway, you know I had to have the matching lamps.

The install of the passing lamps is just about as easy as the headlight, so it is doable for even the most novice of riders. Here are the steps if you are looking to do the same thing. Note: I recommend doing one side at the time for comparison purposes.

  1. At the base of the passing lamp is a screw. Back the screw out just enough with a Philips head screwdriver to allow your fingers to grip the back of the ring and pull towards you to pop it off. The screw is into a nut on the other side, making the ring act similar to a spring.

  2. Unplug the passing lamp by pulling the side taps outward and wiggling the plug loose.

  3. There is an inner ring that will come off with the stock passing lamp that is not needed and cam be placed to the side. This ring that has been set to the side is meant to help hold the thinner stock passing lamp in place. With the LED module thicker, the ring is not needed.

  4. With the Wixtech Superspots, there is an extra wiring harness in the box that is only needed if slicing in required for your year model bike.

  5. Take a moment to clean in inside of the passing lamp housing and the outer ring prior to reassembling the lamp.

  6. Plug the passing lamp into the wiring harness inside the passing lamp housing.

  7. Take a moment to turn on the bike and make sure that the plug was attached correctly. Though it should only go in one way, better to check now than once everything is reassembled only to discover that the plug is in backwards.

  8. Ensure all the wires are secured inside the passing lamp housing and pop the outer ring back into place. Compare to the other lamp to make sure the ring is fully secured. Turn the ring to have the screw located at the bottom (6 o'clock position) and tighten about 3/4 of the way.

  9. Adjust the passing lamp to that desired position and secure the screw the rest of the way until the ring no longer wants to rotate.

  10. Repeat the process on the other side.

It is really that simple. The whole thing, minus the extra time I lost trying to reuse the inner ring that is not needed with these LED modules, requires about an hour.

I really like how the front of my bike looks now. It is not only easier to see at night, it is easier to see me even during the day. And completing these two projects has given me the courage to take on the more challenging upgrades as well. If this is something you have been thinking about doing to your own bike, don't wait. You can do it!
