Install LED Headlight For A Road King Classic

It is finally time to install the LED headlight for a Road King Classic! Though I have to admit that I was a bit intimidated to take on the project. I mean… Scarlett is still under warranty. What if I screw something up? And I am one of those people that knows just enough about mechanical and electrical to have the ability to truly screw something up. Yep, that's me.

So after doing a bit of research and talking to my parts guy, Tony at Santa Maria Harley-Davidson, I made my choice. I decided to go with the WixTech Superspots Chrome LED Headlight Halo Headlamp. I chose this light because it is one of the few truly plug and play after market LED headlights for the Road King and because I just liked the look of it.

The install turned out to be easier than I expected and I was able to accomplish it almost completely on my own. I did have to ask my husband to help me with a couple of screws that were on too tight. Here are the steps if you are looking to do the same thing.

  1. At the base of the headlight is a screw. Remove it and then turn the front ring plate counter clockwise approximately 1/8 of a turn. Now grip the back of the ring and pull towards you to pop it off.

  2. Remove the 3 screws that are holding the inner ring in place. These are located in a triangle with one at the top center of the ring. Once these are removed the headlight will fall forward.

  3. Unplug the headlight noting which plug is for the low beams and which is the high. If you are working on a 2020 model, the low beam plug will be black and the high beam plug will be gray.

  4. With the Wixtech Superspots, there will be 2 wiring harnesses in the box. Connect the Dual Beam Splitter Harness to the existing wiring harness on the bike. The blue wire is for low beam and the red wire is for high beam. So blue to black and red to gray.

  5. Plug the 3 prong end into the new LED headlight. Take note of the notched on the back of the light and of where any writing is on the lens. Before starting the process to reattach the assembly, check to make sure that all the connections are tight and that the light works by turning on the bike with the kill switch disengaged.

  6. Hold the new LED headlight while reattaching the inner ring. Take a moment before reassembling all parts to clean everything that is going back on the bike.

  7. Ensure that the rubber gasket is firmly connected to the outer ring and under the spring wire inside. Locate the notch in the wire and place that just to the left of center and pop the ring back onto. Tune clock wise, catching the wire notch behind the notch on the inner ring, until the hole at the bottom of the ring aligns with the one on the bike.

  8. Return the screw to hold the whole thing in place.

It Is Done And I Did It!!!!

It is really that simple. The whole thing, minus the extra time to use WD40 to help loosen the screws on the inner ring, required about half an hour.

Not only is it easier to see me, the lights look good, and I did it all myself! So if this is something you have been thinking about doing to your own bike, don't wait. You can do it!

Now get out and ride, have fun, be safe, and catch you in the next post……
